The ocean is home to some of Earth’s most bizarre creatures; both terrifying and fascinating. For this project we have set out to visually explore what exactly is so interesting about aquatic animals. In doing so we discovered they were so much more than simply fascinating; they were out of this world! Capturing images was less like going underwater to see the unknown and more like being enveloped by a black hole only to be spit out into a world governed by slippery space creatures.

Porthole windows are a reminder to us of how dangerous the world can be no matter how delicate it looks while floating by. On a submarine they are a limited but important view for the ship’s occupants. Making them a symbol of how critical observing the outside world can be. No matter the situation, on land or in water; in nature or in our heads – we must always keep an eye on the world around us.

Even if it’s just through a porthole.

AKIS - (means 'eyes' in Lithuanian)

--Nathan Jurevicius has worked as a freelance illustrator and artist for many international companies and publications.

His most acclaimed project to date is Scarygirl. The brand since its creation in 2001 has developed an underground following of fans throughout the globe through it's online comic, numerous limited edition vinyl toys, designer products and travelling shows.

In 2004 Oscar winning producer Sophie Byrne of Passion Pictures Australia optioned Scarygirl . The property is now in active script and visual development for an animated feature film. Nathan also completed his first graphic novel based on Scarygirl released by Australia's leading Independent publisher, Allen and Unwin and distributed in North America by Last Gasp. The graphic novel has since garnered various accolades including winning the 2009 Aurealis Award for Best Illustrated Book/Graphic Novel.

In 2009 Nathan released the Scarygirl online game produced with Passion Pictures Australia and developed with the assistance of the Film Victoria Digital Media Fund. Players have surpassed 1 million.

Nathan is currently developing a series of tv shorts and a game based on his new property 'Peleda' with the ABC.

DesignerCon: 9 Weirdest Scenes at Pasadena's Convention of Nerds in Toyland

Santa's workshop came early this year DesignerCon. On Saturday, Exhibit Hall A at the Pasadena Convention Center temporarily turned into a pop-up, pop-art fair and toy market filled with commercial designers and design fans alike.

A group of artists and toy-makers first created the Vinyl Toy Network in 2006. Since re-dubbed DesignerCon, the yearly fair now not only opens its doors to toy artists and retailers, but the public, too -- just in time for the pre-holiday season, mad-buying rush.

DesignerCon isn't just about toys anymore, either. Over one hundred vendors sell everything from art prints and greeting cards to knickknacks fashioned from fake fur, leather and legos. The public is also encouraged to get creative with Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School, an ersatz figure-drawing class featuring anime-inspired models. Visitors also made buttons from their own sketches, colored in black-and-white, artist-rendered coloring books, and picked up blank resin figurines to decorate later. Think you have what it takes to be a successful commercial artist? You can always rent a booth next year. In the meantime, feel free to check out some of our pictures below.

Seen: Clutter x Pete Fowler -- 'Toy Prince' Release Party

After Thursday's NYCC preview session, collectors, artists and industry types made the quick trip over to Concrete for the afterparty featuring the debut release of Pete Fowler's 'Toy Prince' from new label Cherry Vinyl, based on his DTA trophy design. The largeish figure (8" or so) is the result of as Julie B. colorfully described it, an 'orgy' featuring her cast resin figure and Lulubell's Grody Shogun's vinyl crown, cast in Japan. Each of the figures offered at the party features a unique hand-painted design. Stay tuned for more NYCC 2011 coverage.

KATE CHILKO - Danceurs Illogiques

Kate Chilko is a Brooklyn based life-form who heartily struggles with
the task of writing brief biographical summations. Born in West
Virginia, she studied Creative Writing while nestled in the lukewarm
bosom of Sarah Lawrence College. She is one of an unknown number of
persons who accidentally cultivated a career in the visual arts by
failing at a career in writing. Working in the commercial toy world
for more than eight years, she's had her hands on all the big names in
the pre-school crowd: Spongebob, Spiderman, Ernie and Bert and the
incomparable Dora the Explorer.
For the past two years she has worked on a wide variety of creative
pursuits as a painter, sculptor and designer. On more than one
occasion, she helped produce garbage cans for the King of Saudi
Arabia.
In the fall of 2011, she will dip her first toe into the designer toy
pond, and with great anticipation will watch for any perceptible
ripples.

Each piece is meticulously hand painted and comes with a beautiful collectors case and signed print. NYCC edition is limited to 8 pieces - 110/each

CHIE(pronunciation is "chee-a") was reared in Tokyo, Japan.

She holds a masters degree in sculpture from Tokyo University of the Arts.

After graduating Chie worked in the product industry in Tokyo

over 6 years as a 3D modeling and 3D scanning artist.

This professional experience, creating actual three-dimensional

models from 3D software, has influenced her current work

where she creates sculpture, not only by hand, but with

computer 3D software.

She is based on Los Angeles.

This is the first toy which is designed and modeled by her in USA.

This toy called "トケルウサギ" means melting rabbit.

This "Melting" series express what changes happen when

melting a shape = could equal a body/mind transformation.

CARRIE KRUGER - Deep Sea Creep

Carrie Kruger has a Fine Arts in Design degree and
recently moved from Lawrence, Kansas to Los Angeles, California.
She hopes to artistically figure herself out in this new life venue.
Carrie Kruger thought herself a space alien until the age of 10
and since then has been searching for answers.

"I am just trying to make sense of this world."

conglomerates of things i encounter,

She lived in the deep

Elliot is an LA based fine artist and has made pieces for Kanye West and Jeff Koons, to name a few. He is hitting the art toy scene with flying colors and we are honored to be working with him.

Elliot Jackson is an in-house sculptor/designer at Pretty In Plastic. He resides in Los Angeles by way of Minnesota. He is presenting a ring series which are sculpted by him and hand cast in small batches.

Los Angeles, CA - October 12th, 2011 - Following the success of his early 2010 original Grenade Bunny collectible toy release, designer/artist Rich DeSimone will be launching his new limited, Special Edition Grenade Bunny that boasts a hand painted rust finish. This project is a collaboration between Lucky Bunny Visual Communications, Hold Up Art, and Pretty In Plastic.

The new release is hand painted and naturally oxidized to create a rusted look and will be same dimensions and weight as the original collectible toy (approx. 4.25" x 6"). Only 20 pieces will be released in this unique finish, and will retail for $200. The Special Edition will also come beautifully packaged in a hand made wooden grenade crate.

About Rich DeSimone:

Torn, disused billboards, distressed industrial objects, street posters, and everyday uses of graphics, logos, and letterforms fuel constant idea generation for Rich DeSimone. Ideas come 24-7. They roll around in his mind, combine, and are tossed out and re-imagined. A few percolate to the outside where they become art prints, works on panel, and posters.

Middle-class Italian altar boys from Boston don’t usually see a clear-cut path to creative freedom. Rich’s upbringing, typically strict for the area, saw him looking more deeply into simple objects than other kids did. Church was a drag sometimes, but he found some interesting images there, from little dove drawings and typography on the psalm book to the priests’ robes and the graphic power of the cross. It wasn’t zealousness he found in Catholicism, but a first inkling that he would make art.

After spending time at the Art Institute of Boston, Rich took a spin through the advertising world, where he created icons to assist a religion of a very different kind. Turns in Atlanta and Minneapolis, and always back to Boston in between, gave him insight into the ad world. From huge, stifling agencies to smaller, edgier ones. Wherever he was, the ad business was full of egotism and limitation, though, and Rich wanted to realize his ideas without having them diluted. Today, he’s shaken free of the ad race and runs his own art and screen printing business, Lucky Bunny Visual Communications, out of Los Angeles, California. In his workspace he gets complete control over the process, and the satisfaction of a hands-on craft. His work is often simple and purely graphic, with a tongue-in-cheek slyness that belies a deeper conceptual background. The idea of duplicity and expendability—of printing multiples that end up scattered and potentially thrown away—is key. It’s branding, only with cleaner goals.

There’s no smoke and mirrors, no smug secret, to what Rich does: it’s just a million ideas, combined, altered, thrown out, and executed with a little humor and cunning.

The Lucky Bunny name, by the way, comes from his pet rabbit, who coincidentally is adorable yet destructive, smart and sensitive.

FEMKE HIEMSTRA for CHERRY VINYL

Painter, illustrator and collector of flea market treasures, the Dutch artist Femke Hiemstra is ready to present her first vinyl toy in collaboration with the fantastic Cherry Vinyl.

Considered one of the most interesting Pop Surrealist made in Europe, Femke Hiemstra's artworks are populated by anthropomorphic animals and supernatural creatures that look like they've just landed from a Grimm Brothers' fairy tale to take part to the Halloween party.
A wondeful mixture of magic, cuteness, creepy and an astonishing technique, the observer can't help but become kidnapped inside her intriguing stories painted on such unique and appropriately wonderful surfaces as vintage book covers, candy tin boxes or stoops.
The arrival of such terrific new character as Le Chat Domestique inside the toy scene, can't be but acclaimed by collectors and lovers.

1) Femke you are an internationally famous artist from Holland. Your artworks highly sought after, with a long waiting list (and I know because I tried many times!). Can you please introduce yourself?

I'm a former illustrator who kind of rolled into making art. I used to make painted illustrations but at one point went along with the digital revolution and switched to making Photoshop coloured work. But I found the constant staring at a monitor not very pleasant so I went back to painting again, but this time only for the fun of it. I put those works online and they got noticed up by a gallery and they offered me a spot in a show and so the ball started rolling. At one point I could not combine Illustration with art anymore so I decided to go solely for the latter. And here I am!

2) Most of your paintings are book covers of invented novels with a terrific narrative power: an entire surrealist fairy tale described in one single picture. Do you use to create an entire story, with characters and a plot, when you are sketching a new piece or art? Or is mostly a matter of great composition?

What I paint is a scene from a story, not a complete story nor just a composition.

3) Le Chat is your first vinyl toy, inspired by your painting Le Chat Domestique. Do you follow the toys scene? Which are you favorite artists or vinyl toys?

I must admit that I hardly follow the toy scene. When seeing a cool vinyl toy I'm usually able to recognize the work of the artist but I really can't tell you any names. But I do like characters a lot and collect them as well, but mostly the more awkward looking, unfamiliar stuff that you can find on fleamarkets or in antique shops.

4) If so, what is the story behind Le Chat Domestique, and why did you choose among all your incredible cast of figures to introduce yourself in the art toys scene with this character?

Luke of Lulubell was the one who invited me to make this toy. He made me curious and I said yes to the invitation. Le Chat was picked out to be "vinylized" since the cat has a great personality, that would be strong enough to stand on his own in a 3D world.

5) I know that you love cats, is our Le Chat inspired by one of yours?

There's always a bit of Noodles in all my cat characters, but this one was inspired by a dog. An Afghan hound, to be more precise. I saw one in my neighborhood and watched his long wavy hair. It made me think about people 'molding' animals into a shape that we think as beautiful and it made me think about Persian cats as well. (Although there's a lot to be said about the human influence on animal looks, it's not exactly what I wanted to get into). An image of a cat with long hair appeared before my minds eye. Sitting straight, and a bit grumpy looking, in contrast with it's elegant filaments as if it was unhappy with his own appearance. 'Le Chat Domestique' or 'The Domestic Cat', a surreal portrait of a house cat was born.

6) I know that you love to wander in flea markets all over the world and you can boast an incredible collection of vintage toys and mascots, postcards, matchboxes and more. Which are your favorite treasures in your Wunderkammer?

I have so many favorites! I do like my little plastic polar bear on ski's as much as I like this set of cheaply made, pipe smoking Easter bunnies or this set of fluffy ducks with guitars and silly hats. They all have personality.

7) Which one of your creature you think would be a good companion for Le Chat?

Another animal could work or perhaps a snowmen or something dead-ish, skeleton-like. But let's bring Le Chat into the world first, shall we?

8) You are a Dutch artist from Amsterdam, but you’re art is very well known in America as well. Are most of your collectors are European or Americans?

I think it's a 50/50 mix that leans a bit more to the US side since I show there the most.

9) Your works are always a composition of figures and lettering, in English, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, French, Dutch and many others. How do you choose with language would fit for a specific artworks?

I first come up with a title, than translate it in various languages and than see what feels/fits best.

She was in NY on business and pleasure and met up with us in Beacon, the Art Worlds 3 day weekend retreat and home to some of the Designer Toy worlds luminaries. Over a lunch of locally grown slow food we got to take these candid sneak peak pics of her new toy production with Tara McPherson, George The Vampire!

OK, these are most excellent. Many of Joe Ledbetter‘s characters look great as toy art, but Mr. Bunny is just really a classic piece and an icon in the designer toy genre. Now Ledbetter has announced the release of an edition of 40 one-off, hand-painted Mutant Bunnies in resin! The 12-inch figures were designed and painted by Ledbetter and sculpted impeccably by Pretty in Plastic. Five figures have been posted in JLED’s online shop, with the first three (Mr., Miss, and Monster Bunny) already sold out.

The two available (at press time) Mutant Bunnies (red/blue Temper Bunny and orange Tiger Bunny) are offered at $1,500 each, and the remaining 35 resins will be sold “intermittently for the next year or so”. Congrats to whoever got that #3 Green Monster Mutant Bunny (ya jerkface), and nice work from Joe and Julie! Click through for closeups of all the Bunnies.

Designer Toy Awards 2011 Tonight!

Yes you heard that correctly. Tonight is the 2011 Designer Toy Awards. The most prestigious toy event of the year. Held during San Diego Comicon, this is a tough ticket to get. Pretty in Plastic's very own Julie B will be there so be sure to come up and say hi!

This year Pretty in Plastic has the honor of making the trophies that the winners of the 2011 Designer Toy Awards will receive. No one has seen these exclusive designer pieces yet, but that will all change tonight.

We are really excited to finally announce that Clutter friend and favorite, Pete Fowler, star toy designer and Designer Toy Awards (DTA) Board Member, has designed "The Toy King," the award which will be given to winners in all categories of the inaugural Designer Toy Awards.

Pete and Clutter go back a long way, with his amazing artwork gracing our first ever cover, so it made perfect sense for us to approach Pete to be the award designer. He is a godfather of the Designer Toy World, and we really couldn't have been happier when he said yes.

"I'm honored to be part of the DTA's and designing the actual award", said Pete. "I can't believe that there's not been awards like this already but am happy to see it kicking off now and in the capable hands of the Clutter gang, so get voting and show your love to the designers you dig."

"The Toy King", is manufactured by Pretty In Plastic Inc based in Los Angeles, is made of chromed resin. With the base he will stand at thirteen inches high. The award, designed by Pete Fowler, has been created exclusively for winners of the DTAs and was lovingly sculpted and meticulously constructed by Julie B and her team at Pretty In Plastic. "Pete's design is pretty perfect and it was an honor to bring him from design to royal glory", said Julie B. "Wait until you feast your eyes on this guy, all shnazzy and shiny…everyone will want a piece of the king!"

"The Toy King" will be awarded to DTA winners revealed at a ceremony held in conjunction with the infamous Munky King Comic Con Party at Bar Basic, 410 Tenth Ave, San Diego, CA 92101 Thursday July 21st, 8 PM – 2 AM.

Remember Public voting is currently open over on the DTA site, and you are able to vote ONCE PER DAY, for your favorite nominations. This will close next Wednesday July 6th so make sure you get your votes cast. The response has been overwhelming so every vote counts!!

The design of "The Toy King" will be unveiled in the upcoming weeks before the ceremony, plus more exciting news!!"

Super Heroes To The Rescue!

You must have heard of Alter Ego by Erika Walton. If you haven't this is how she explains her work "Alter Ego recycles vintage toys from the 1950's - 1990's and incorporates them with semi-precious stones, beads and charms to create unique, hand crafted pieces to treasure forever."

Can you picture what her work looks like? Trust me, probably not! Erika Walton's designs are not like something that you would see everywhere. Her imagination and designs go to places that not a lot of jewelry designers can go.

I am a huge fan of comic book characters. Doesn't matter if it's DC or Marvel, I love the characters and their stories. I know that they are never forgotten, they make movies, cartoons, prints and many new and different versions of them. BUT, seeing them being used as jewelry pieces makes Erika's work more interesting. And the fact that the vintage toys are being used is a big plus.

Being said that, now you're wondering what's this have to do with Pretty In Plastic? We are proud to say that Pretty In Plastic & Erika Walton worked together for the Erika Walton Jewelry Superhero Collection. And if you ask me, they look superb!!

-bridging the world of technology, film, and custom toy culture.

The story is told through this creative TransMedia Installation (scroll down to read more), Including the Amber Bear below - created by Pretty In Plastic.

"To bring this theme into the real world, we worked with Pretty in Plastic, an L.A.-based design shop, to create custom totems that have cameras, GPS trackers, MP3 players and thumb drives inside them. The totem, which has a stuffed toy bear enclosed inside, is a striking piece of art designed to fit comfortably in the user’s hand. Within the bear’s head is a slide viewer that flips through images intended to evoke a memory. While the user holds the bear and views the slides, his or her reactions are documented via a camera placed in the bear’s belly. These images are then fed back into various data visualizations used within Mission Control...."

A STORYWORLD EXPERIENCE
Pandemic 1.0 is a transmedia experience that makes use of mobile, online, real-world, print, data visualization, social gaming, serialized and long form content - an innovative social entertainment experience that takes advantage of changes in media consumptions and advancements in technology.

The setting of Pandemic 1.0 centers an a global outbreak of a strange sleep virus that leaves only the adults infected. Adults are transformed into "sleep stalkers" who roam in packs, hunt for youth and exhibit hive mind like abilities. They only come out at night. Meanwhile the youth have been left to their own devices and each knows that with adulthood comes a certain fate. It is within this post- apocalyptic world of depleting resources and impending threat the Players / viewers of Pandemic find themselves.

Mission Control (at Park City) is the only way to learn where you stand in the face of the spreading pandemic."

Pandemic 1.0 is a story R&D (research and development) project, the first step in a larger transmedia build that includes film, mobile, online and real-world events. This transmedia extension is set within the same story world as a feature film that I co-wrote and will be directing called HiM — a Lord of the Flies-style tale about a strange sleep virus that only affects adults and leaves the youth fighting for their lives.

Over a period of 120 hours, Pandemic 1.0 unfolds in a mixture of online and offline events. Festival attendees and those just viewing online are able to interact through a “social experiment,” one that harnesses various social and emerging technologies to impact the spread of a pandemic.

For instance, Pandemic 1.0 which unfolds within New Frontier and the U.S. Narrative Shorts section of the festival, is told with…

1 short film telling the story of a sister and brother coming to terms with an infected parent.

1 magazine containing a “rabbit hole” leading to elements in the experience. Here’s a hint: You’re holding it.

5 secret locations scattered throughout Park City.

6 totems with cameras, GPS trackers, MP3 players and thumb drives embedded inside them.

10 scares that can be requested by those following the experience online. The scares are then carried out on unsuspecting festivalgoers.

20 actors carrying Flip cams who perform scenes as the “pandemic” unfolds.

50 story artifacts placed throughout Park City containing barcodes, #hashtags and RFID.

5,000 bottles of water that when found and brought to special locations have health properties that aid to slow the spread of the pandemic.

40,000+ festivalgoers whose social behaviors and interactions inform the spread or slowing of the pandemic.

50,000+ photographs harvested from the Internet and filtered in real time to be relevant to the story of a spreading pandemic.

1,000,000+ points of data visualized within a special Mission Control space showing how the story is unfolding on a global level.

My Chemical Romance: Mousekat Resin

As part of the lead up to the recent release of My Chemical Romance's latest Dangerous Day album, sculptor David Zajdman and Jed Carter (La Bande Wagon) created a limited-edition Mousekat resin figure based on the original artwork provided by the band. Sculpted in short order (three days) and produced by Julie B (Pretty in Plastic), the Mousekat resins (ed. of 50) were released in solid blue exclusively at MCR’s November 22nd show @ the House of Blues in LA.

This sharp-looking, spunky piece continues a growing trend towards music crossover projects. In our book it’s a positive move which exposes new audiences to collectible art toys/sculptures. Mousekat is sculptor David Zajdman’s first production sculpt. Next up for David is the Omi Show @ Munky King.

Pay special attention to this juxtaposition between Julie and Stephanie, or Pretty in Plastic and Miyu Decay, or as I like to call it “Pretty Decay”. I think it’s got legs, don’t you? Jellyfish legs…

D-con stood for desire...and debaucherous this year. We won't go into all the details...but here is a re-cap of the day and pictures from the show.

We were happy to host NEON MONSTER and all the AMAZING customs of the mini Psnail. Everyone did a kick-ass job.

The Weird Watermelon colorway was released and received with awe and affection. It glowed nicely atop our Custom Display for the D-con Psnail light show. These glowing pillars were made out of recycled barrels and with glossy lit caps.

Renee came out early for the show and it was an honor to meet this uber talented illustrator. We also had some of her books for sale which are also available through Meltdown.

She is also having a very special release coming up in NYC in a few weeks. We will keep you posted.

Stephanie Inagaki was able to spend the day with us and we showcased some amazing pieces by her. Check out her site... We have an awesome project in the works with this very talented grrl...and are ramping up our custom silver and jewelry production. Ask us more...

L.A.-based artist Peekaboo Monster has neighbors who make soap. He wanted to include soap in his work for Small Gift, Sanrio's 50th anniversary art show currently running at Santa Monica Barker Hangar. But how was he going to combine the two?

"Honestly, we were all just kind of hanging out one night and drinking and having fun and it just kind of clicked," he said at the November 11 opening party. "I was like, 'Let's tie it into a Fight Club theme. It will tie it in with the soap and we'll make the characters basically kind of being turned into the soap bars.'"

Plastered with posters that read "Sanrio 50th Club: Have you picked a character lately?", Peekaboo Monster's installation is as much a tribute to the gruesome world of Fight Club as it is to the cuteness of Sanrio.

"It was a fun idea," said Peekaboo Monster. "I like the movie. It was different from what Sanrio would normally do with their characters."

The installation features four portraits of Sanrio characters who remain easily recognizable despite their bruises and gashes. These paintings-- "Keroppi Hopi Dream," "Badtz Maru Crew," "Hello Kitty Splits What She Sees" and "A Pandapple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away"-- are inspired in part by another pop culture touchstone.

"The idea behind that was almost like Punch Out!!, after you play the game, the frame after the round of them being beat, I kind of wanted it to be like that," he explained.

There are also three resin sculptures in the installation, each one holding a bar of soap made by Peekaboo Monster and his friends from Level Naturals. The hot pink resin gore dripping off one Hello Kitty statue actually glows in the dark.

"It's the biggest sculpture I've done so far, so it was interesting to do one, let alone three of them," said Peekaboo Monster.

As for the soap, they're available for sale at the exhibition, separate from the art pieces as well.
