"Last Friday, Gallery 1988 was transformed into Castle Grayskull for the opening of Under the Influence: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. This edition of the gallery’s annual series celebrates the sword and sorcery cartoon which stoked the imagination of many of today’s artists. As you might expect, a large crowd came out for the event with the line stretching to the end of the block.

All in all, the quality of art in this large group show is quite good. It’s a challenge to curate a pop culture theme show with so many artists – 1988 has it down. cold. The standout piece of the show? Robert Burden’s Battle Cat Statant – stunning oil on canvas piece at a massive 100” x 70” inches (check out the amazing creation-of video below). If you loved He-Man as a kid or maybe secretly cheered for Skeletor, you need to check out the show. We also have to give props to Julie B. of Pretty in Plastic for turning the normally white walls of 1988 into a realistic recreation of Castle Greyskull with a great stone brick texture and faux moss. Enjoy our opening pics after the jump and be sure to check out the official show preview for artwork availability.
