Endangered Animals Immortalized in Regrind

Julie B for Inflitrate
Yeah, I know the title of this post sounds like an album by some prog band or maybe even something released on a cassette-only label, but what we’re talking about here is Julie B using eco-friendly materials to create a large-scale installation. What exactly is “regrind” you ask? Quoted on her blog:
Julie said, “When I took the initial challenge, it was hard to find anyone who’d managed to utilize regrind (discarded plastic ground into a usable molding substance) and eco-friendly material, in the way I knew it needed to be done to get the effect we wanted – where the creatures are opaque during the day and semi-transparent at night. In the end, while I’m keeping most of technique secret, everything had to be painstakingly hand applied.”

In case you were looking to link Julie B and T-Pain, Kevin Bacon-style, the connection isn’t voice modulation, but rather Save My Oceans, an awareness campaign (also featuring Shepard Fairey), asking people to pledge to:
  1. Choose reusable bottles and bags instead of plastic ones.
  2. Eat non-endangered seafood.
  3. Prevent ocean temperatures from rising by reducing carbon footprint.
These are some things we can get behind. You can make your pledge here. Oh, and the sculptures look rad, too.

Trevor Hall's got 'EarthVibes': Rocker headlining CU-Boulder's Earth Day fest

Trevor Hall loves to perform at Colorado concert venues, but this time he's in town for a special Earth Day mission.
Thursday night, Hall headlines the University of Colorado's EarthVibes 2010 concert at the Glenn Miller Ballroom. The debut environmental gathering also features reggae act Passafire and guest speakers. Plus, special Walt Disney exhibits and information booths will be featured on the UMC Terrace.

celebration.
"This event contributes to CU's mission of sustainability and PC's mission to bring affordable entertainment to the students," Greenstein said. "We wanted to host an Earth Day event that tied in with what individual campus groups were doing.
"People may come for a concert, but they might get educated about the environment through the speakers and tables we'll have set up. Our goal is to merge education and entertainment into one celebration of the Earth."

The event starts at 5 p.m. on the UMC Terrace, the speakers begin at 6 p.m. in the Glenn Miller Ballroom and the music will go on until 10 p.m.

Disney has embraced EarthVibes 2010 and the entertainment company is hosting some unique exhibits on the UMC Terrace.
"Disney's bringing in the 'Pretty in Plastic' exhibit," Greenstein said. "It's by artist Julie B., and her exhibit uses scale-size plastic turtles to illustrate the struggle in the oceans made by the use of plastic bottles.

"We're hoping EarthVibes will raise awareness. We hope people walk away entertained, and with some information about what they can do to help the environment." Dan Bridge is the Student Environmental Action Coalition's campus director and he's thrilled to see his Earth Day dream come to life. "SEAC has been at CU for 10 years and it's a pretty active group," Bridge said. "We do environmental sustainable awareness at CU and we're on a mission to reach out to the student body.
...
"We're going to be bringing in speakers like Boulder Mayor Susan Osborne, and let people learn about climate change and sustainability. Hopefully, if students come for the music and the speakers, they'll get involved with the environmental center's work and make a change."

Huffington Post   |  Ellen C. Caldwell First Posted: 04-15-10 04:04 PM   |   Updated: 04-15-10 11:41 PM

In preparation for Earth Day, The Save My Oceans Tour arrived in LA at USC, kicking off the local stop with a free concert headlined by T-pain. The tour is part of Participant Media's Social Action campaign for Disneynature's upcoming motion picture OCEANS.
Numerous college campuses nationwide are participating in hopes of raising environmental awareness about keeping our oceans clean and protected, while also encouraging people to take the online pledge to only use reusable bottles and bags instead of plastic ones.

In addition to the musical performances, artist Shepard Fairey contributed original artwork for the tour poster and sculptor Julie B. has jumped on the tour to install her series of sculptures "Infiltrate" at each campus stop. She creates life-size sea creatures from recycled plastic bottles and lights them from them from the inside at night, creating quietly haunting sculptures that remind viewers of the implications of using and discarding plastic into our oceans. The menacing outlines of plastic bottles appear from within the creatures -- quite literally illuminating the focus of the tour through art.
Julie B.says that "the motivating factor [behind this series] is the reality of where our discarded plastic ends up, and how that not only affects the oceans and its inhabitants but all human kind." When asked about the process of sculpting from recycled plastic bottles, Julie said, "When I took the initial challenge, it was hard to find anyone who'd managed to utilize regrind (discarded plastic ground into a usable molding substance) and eco-friendly material, in the way I knew it needed to be done to get the effect we wanted - where the creatures are opaque during the day and semi-transparent at night. In the end, while I'm keeping most of technique secret, everything had to be painstakingly hand applied."

The installation at USC runs through April 16th. To see where The Save My Oceans Tour is stopping next, please visit the site and take the pledge: http://www.savemyoceans.com/pledge.php.

Seen: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe

More info and Pictures on VINYL PULSE.

"Last Friday, Gallery 1988 was transformed into Castle Grayskull for the opening of Under the Influence: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. This edition of the gallery’s annual series celebrates the sword and sorcery cartoon which stoked the imagination of many of today’s artists. As you might expect, a large crowd came out for the event with the line stretching to the end of the block.

All in all, the quality of art in this large group show is quite good. It’s a challenge to curate a pop culture theme show with so many artists – 1988 has it down. cold. The standout piece of the show? Robert Burden’s Battle Cat Statant – stunning oil on canvas piece at a massive 100” x 70” inches (check out the amazing creation-of video below). If you loved He-Man as a kid or maybe secretly cheered for Skeletor, you need to check out the show. We also have to give props to Julie B. of Pretty in Plastic for turning the normally white walls of 1988 into a realistic recreation of Castle Greyskull with a great stone brick texture and faux moss. Enjoy our opening pics after the jump and be sure to check out the official show preview for artwork availability.

The opening of the  Lost Underground Art Project exhibition @ Gallery 1988 on Tuesday evening offered a variety of series inspired artwork including a pleasant surprise – custom resin Statues of Tawert.  A select group of artists were asked to customize the ‘four toe’ resins which were sculpted and cast by Julie B. of Pretty in Plastic.  Shown in an excellent thematic desert display, the pieces blend the excitement of art toys and customs with the mythology of Lost in a seamless  and unexpected way.   Look for coverage of the full show including numerous original paintings shortly.
