TGIF! B-Kaws from Necessaries Toy Foundation - Bootlegging a Bootlegger!!

News flash from Spanky Stokes ---

A very interesting solicitation email came our way this morning. Not only was it interesting in what it contained, but it was even more interesting (to us anyway) about who it was from. "B-KAWZ: APPROPRIATING THE APPROPRIATOR" is a new vinyl figure from Necessaries Toy Foundation

With this new release, they are pretty much doing what artist Kaws already does... taking a classic character, putting XX's on the eyes as well as minimal additional sculpted elements, and calling it their own. Now, Kaws does nothing for us in that sense... not very creative - although a few of his designs are great - nothing in recent memory is very original... that's why after seeing this "bootleg" or "tribute" to Kaws is actually kinda cool.

and...
...uncovered some flashback photos from 2006 in the studio in the back of  Meltdown Comics!

20 Rangers for 20 Years - Custom Power Rangers Exhibit

The Power Rangers 20th Anniversary art exhibition and pop-up shop will open this weekend at Toy Art Gallery in Los Angeles. Curated by Sweet Streets, the Power Rangers exhibition, 20 Rangers for 20 Years, will highlight popular artists and designers from around the world and their one-of-a-kind painted 31” Ranger statues.

The exhibition will take place this weekend, Dec. 7th-8th, starting off with a launch event at Toy Art Gallery on Saturday, Dec. 7th from 7-10 p.m. The event will feature music by Iheartcomix DJs Franki Chan and $U$PECT as well as Asian-fusion food by the Jogasaki Sushi Burrito food truck. Each customized Ranger statue will be available for purchase on-site at Toy Art Gallery and online at shop.toyartgallery.com during the event and throughout the weekend. A percentage of the proceeds from all artwork sales will be donated to the Challengers Boys & Girls Club.

20 Rangers for 20 Years will feature hand painted Ranger statues from not only Pretty in Plastic but also: 64 Colors, Ardabus Rubber, Bei Badgirl, Cope2, CRASH, Frank Kozik, Indie 184, Jim Mahfood, Josh Mayhem, Jryu, Kano, Lamour Supreme, Malcolm Stuart, Martin Hsu, Martin Ontiveros, Mathew Curan, MEGGS, Mikie Graham, Olek, Scott Tolleson, Shojono Tomo, Superdeux, TADO, Simone Legno of Tokidoki, and more.

Julie B. worked hard sculpting the Pretty in Plastic contribution and wanted to share a little sneak peak of what to expect this weekend...

Aside from a crew of custom Power Rangers there will also be a mural inspired by the heroes. It's going to be a great night filled with art and "Go Go Power Ranger" chants. We will see you this Saturday at TAG Gallery on Melrose.

Mark Ryden’s YHWH Group Custom Show feat. Julie B!

Come on down to the Toy Art Gallery on Melrose this Saturday night for Mark Ryden’s YHWH Group Custom Show. You can check out a number of amazing reinterpretations of YHWH by a score of talented artists, including our very own Julie B!

Julie B's YHWH reinterpretation

From Ryden: “YHWH is the unpronounceable name of god. My YHWH represents the indefinable nature of the divine and its unspeakable mystery, which can be represented by anything from a burning bush to a three eyed bunny totem. In creating my YHWH toy edition, I stove to elevate each and every individual figure from a mass produced piece of plastic to a magical object. I very much look forward to seeing how each artist responds to the spiritual energies of their YHWHs.”

We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Pretty In Plastic Featured in Design Bureau Magazine

We're incredibly flattered to be featured in the February 2013 issue of Design Bureau Magazine, thanks to toy lover and writer Jeremy Brautman! Jeremy was kind enough to write a great piece on our studio and talk about some of the great projects we've been lucky enough to help produce.

Perfect start to the weekend. :)

Erika Walton Jewelry & Pretty In Plastic!

Super Heroes To The Rescue!

You must have heard of Alter Ego by Erika Walton. If you haven't this is how she explains her work "Alter Ego recycles vintage toys from the 1950's - 1990's and incorporates them with semi-precious stones, beads and charms to create unique, hand crafted pieces to treasure forever."

Can you picture what her work looks like? Trust me, probably not! Erika Walton's designs are not like something that you would see everywhere. Her imagination and designs go to places that not a lot of jewelry designers can go.

I am a huge fan of comic book characters. Doesn't matter if it's DC or Marvel, I love the characters and their stories. I know that they are never forgotten, they make movies, cartoons, prints and many new and different versions of them. BUT, seeing them being used as jewelry pieces makes Erika's work more interesting. And the fact that the vintage toys are being used is a big plus.

Being said that, now you're wondering what's this have to do with Pretty In Plastic? We are proud to say that Pretty In Plastic & Erika Walton worked together for the Erika Walton Jewelry Superhero Collection. And if you ask me, they look superb!!

You can find the Superhero collection on Alter Ego website:

I definitely want one of these!
